Influence of Soil Characteristics on Biomass Growth and Reproduction of Earthworm Eisenia fetida

چکیده
It is known that in vermicomposting soil layer in bedding of the reactor helps in earthworm biomass growth and reproduction but growth is influenced by soil characteristics such as texture, pH, and water holding capacity. The present study was conducted to asses the influence of soils on earthworm biomass growth and reproduction during the vermicomposting of source separated human faeces. The study was conducted by using the earthworm species Eisenia fetida with agriculture, saline and sandy soils. The study utilized reactors with SVFV combination (soil, vermicompost, faeces and vermicompost bottom to top layers). All sets of reactors were examined monthly for four months for growth of earthworms and offspring production. The results of the study indicated that biomass growth of earthworms and offspring production were in the order: sandy soil > agricultural soil > saline soil. The multiplication of earthworm was 3.8-5.5–fold within 4 months. Vermicomposting helped to improve the soil characteristics such as carbon and nitrogen content, pH and conductivity. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Effects of Varying Coffee Ground Amounts on earthworm Eisenia fetida Biomass in Vermicomposting
The process of vermicomposting with Eisenia fetida has been regarded as a viable solution to the frequent disposal and waste of used coffee grounds. The effects of coffee grounds on earthworms have yet to be fully understood. In a manipulative experiment with varying ratios of coffee grounds and earthworms, we investigate how the amount of coffee grounds affect total earthworm biomass and also ...
متن کاملShort Communication AVOIDANCE, WEIGHT LOSS, AND COCOON PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT FOR EISENIA FETIDA EXPOSED TO C60 IN SOIL
Eisenia fetida was used as a model terrestrial organism to assess the potential ecotoxicity of molecular pristine C60 in soil. Reproduction (assessed by counting cocoon numbers) was hindered only at very high C60 concentrations (5% by weight), and C60 (up to 1%) was not avoided and did not hinder earthworm growth. This suggests that E. fetida is unlikely to experience acute toxicity as a result...
متن کاملEffects of Dichlorovos Organophosphate on Growth, Reproduction, and Avoidance Behavior of Earthworm Eisenia foetida
Background: The indispensable use of agrochemicals has created serious threats for earthworms abundance and their population therefore, several earthworm protocols have gained acceptance for use in tests to assess the effects of soil chemicals on soil organisms. Dichlorovos, an organophosphorus pesticide, is one of the widely used pesticides in agricultural fields of M.P., Central India. The ...
متن کاملThe effect of neutralized and non-neutralized pomegranate pulp on features of Eisenia fetida and vermicompost
ABSTRACT - Vermicomposting with pomegranate pulp can not only prevent pollution of the environment but can also create jobs, generate added value and prevent the waste of energy and the country's capital. This factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design. The first factor (a) in two levels contained neutralized pomegranate pulp with lime and non-neutralized pulp. The sec...
